Ogljikov dioksid, ki nastane pri proizvodnji energije, namre\u010d ujamejo in raztopijo v ogromnih koli\u010dinah vode, nato pa vbrizgajo v kamnino, kjer se za\u010dne postopek mineralizacije.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u010ce poenostavim, delamo sodavico iz ogljikovega dioksida,&#8221; je dejala vodja projekta Edda Sif Aradottir, ki je pojasnila, da vodo po me\u0161anju z ogljikovim dioksidom po\u0161ljejo nekaj kilometrov stran, kjer jo pod visokim pritiskom vbrizgajo v kamnine na globini 1000 metrov.<\/p>\n<p>Teko\u010dina zapolni praznine v porozni kamnini in za\u010dne se proces strjevanja, ki nastopi zaradi stika plina s kalcijem, magnezijem in \u017eelezom v bazaltu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Skoraj ves ogljikov dioksid, ki smo ga vbrizgali v pilotnem projektu, je v dveh letih mineraliziral,&#8221; je dejala Snaebjornsdottir. Ko se ogljik spremeni v kamnino, je tam ujet prakti\u010dno za vedno.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u010ce bi pri\u0161lo do izbruha vulkana &#8230; in bi se kamnine segrele do zelo visokih temperatur, bi se nekaj mineralov razbilo in morebiti raztopilo v vodi,&#8221; je pojasnil geokemik Sigurdur Gislason z Univerze na Islandiji.
