Policija v Pensilvaniji še preiskuje ozadje nesreče, vodi pa jo Nacionalni odbor za varnost v prometu, saj na zahodu Pensilvanije tako hude nesreče ne pomnijo. Cesta je bila malce mokra, vendar ledu ni bilo. Kaže, da je avtobus prehitro pripeljal po hribu navzdol v ovinek.

Zaradi nesreče je bil promet na avtocesti Pensilvanija zaprt v obe smeri vse do nedelje zvečer. Na avtobusu so bili potniki, ki so se večinoma vračali s prazničnega obiska v New Yorku in okolici. Med ranjenimi so osebe stare od sedem do 67 let. Trčenje bi bilo lahko še hujše, vendar zgodaj zjutraj v nedeljo ni bilo veliko prometa.
