Here are a few more (less ironic) examples of the same sort of exclusionary design from around my neighbourhood. Most of these are deliberate choices by the city. pic.twitter.com/fqEtbAHI0y

Recognizing instances of hostile design & poor accessibility is important — it’s a solid representation of who is considered part of the community in public spaces. It’s not the end of the discussion though and no one concerned about hostile design would argue that it should be.

Someone should really give media attention to how ridiculous this is. Maybe @sprawlcalgary @Metropike @mikesbloggity? #yyc https://t.co/mSw8Jh1kYi

Never realized that the divided seating on public benches was a deterrent for those needing a place to sleep…
What a reality check that is. https://t.co/VrayPGv1X0

The crime of designing public spaces to be uncomfortable, especially as an affront to unhoused humans. Making it more difficult for someone to rest safely & comfortably in public spaces.— BoulderNews (@markgelband) 13 May 2018
Perhaps those supports are to help the elderly patron mentioned to stand up after sitting down ? Something to be considered at the least.
